I urge all non-custodial parents to calculate their own child support. I've always been good with mathematics, but I dreaded diving into this because I thought I would have to do hundreds of hours of research and make a bunch of phone calls to figure out how it's done. (I'm one of those guys that rarely used a calculator in high school and even if there was a worksheet or computer program, I would figure it long-hand so I knew exactly how it was done.)
Figuring child support is surprisingly simple. Colorado has their worksheets posted online, which calculate the support automatically after just a few basic entries for income, number of children, days of parenting time, etc.
See if your state has a worksheet online. If not, contact the appropriate Department of Human Services and ask them to send you a copy of the worksheet and full instructions on how it is calculated. If you have any trouble, email me. If your numbers don't match the judge's, your case was likely fixed to increase the state's federal funding (and probably the bribes, kickbacks and payoffs).
