The budget of the state has taken precedence in people's minds, and with this comes the start of the 124th Legislature. In a new session that will have many bills being considered, we as citizens need to be aware and accountable for possible enactments.
One bill would prohibit a person whose parental rights had been terminated from gaining custody of a grandchild. LD 528 is an important bill for the rights of those children who have been removed from homes that were earlier deemed unsafe.
If we turn around and place children with adults who had already lost their parental rights in the past, why did we bother to remove them in the first place?
With our state budget already in such a sad state of affairs, the big push may be to place children in kinship care, which is based on family members and could be more beneficial to the children involved.
The way this bill is written makes it a cut and dry decision for the courts not to place children in that care if there has been previous termination of parental rights of any child by the grandparent involved.
Our government needs enact this bill as law. Our children are our future, so taking steps to make sure they are safe is important.
I wonder if this includes CPS and other state workers???
