ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GEORGIA - Local and federal agents executed a search warrant this morning at the St. Simons Island Clinic.
Officers were waiting for physician William Nelson when he arrived at 7:45 a.m. to open his office at Redfern Village near the island's airport and began their search, said Capt. Terry Wright, commander of the Glynn-Brunswick Narcotics Enforcement Team.
Two agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration participated in the search, Wright said.
Steve Will of the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners was also at Nelson's office.
Wright said the officers were executing a federal warrant that had been secured as the result of a lengthy joint investigation.
He declined further comment.
Composite State Board of Medical Examiners records show that Nelson's medical license was administratively suspended in December 2001 because he had failed to pay child support.
Although the board notified Nelson of the suspension on Dec. 21, 2001, he continued to prescribe narcotics to patients, according to a public consent order filed April 4, 2003.
The order shows that Nelson prescribed drugs to 20 patients, identified only by their initials, from Jan. 2 through Jan. 20, 2002.
The drugs included Xanax, Oxycontin, Percocet, Valium, methadone, hydrocodone and Darvocet. Nelson agreed to undergo additional education on the appropriate prescribing of controlled substances.
Also in April 2003, the medical board ordered Williams to take a mini-course in pharmacy after he was found to have written the wrong dates on prescriptions, records show.
